These edit boxes support normal editing, arrow keys, tab key and the like. In addition, you can use the Cut, Copy, and Paste commands in the pop-up menu’s Edit submenu or their respective command-key equivalents, namely, command-X, command-C, and command-V. You can use this feature to copy a string from a hypercard field and paste it into the find what edit box.


The next step is to specify a search method to use. The XCMD can search by either using find string or find whole. Find string is the default — the Find Whole submenu item in the searchreplace submenu is not checked. To use find whole, choose the submenu item to check it on.

The following explains how find string and find whole work. Find string succeeds in finding a string whenever the letters match exactly in order including the spaces, regardless of the position of the string in relation to other letters. So, then, with “or a” as the string being searched, find string would find it in both “a duck or a frog” as well as in “For a quick estimate”. Find Whole succeeds in finding a string whenever the letters match in order exactly including spaces, except there must be spaces on both sides of the match. Thus, find whole would find “or a” in “a duck or a frog”, but not in “For a quick estimate”.
